I love finding different ways to help with different issues, often looking beyond supplements. Of course, one of the most effective (and simplest) ways to support your pet’s health is to feed them a good diet, and I’m not just talking about a high-quality kibble! This can include adding raw, gently cooked, freeze-dried, or other forms of food. One of my favorite ways to promote both overall AND specific health is by feeding organ meat.
“Like supports like” is an idea that comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. If you would like to learn more about it, you can read about it here! -> (Hot vs Cold) The idea suggests that food is medicine and feeding organs, such as the heart, liver, and lungs (etc.), supports the function of those same organs. It’s believed that feeding these organs transfers their minerals, nutrients, and vitality to your pet. Organ meats can look like secreting organs (like liver, kidneys, testicles, the brain, etc), but feeding non-secreting organs can also be beneficial.
What is a secreting organ?
A secreting organ produces and releases substances into the body. This can look like hormones, bile, and other essential compounds. These organs play a huge part in maintaining the body’s functions—think of them as natural multivitamins! These are also VERY rich in vitamins and minerals. Since not all proteins contain the same nutrient levels, it is important to rotate proteins AND the organs you feed.
How can I start to incorporate these?
In many ways! A popular and easy way is to give them as freeze-dried treats. Many reputable brands sell single-ingredient treats like these. You can also incorporate them as a raw add-in. Feeding raw has numerous benefits, but it can be costly, so it’s often not a first choice. You can mix raw ingredients with whatever you are primarily feeding.
