Looking to add something simple to your pet’s diet but not sure where to start? Try one of these! Most of these you could find already in your cabinet or at your local pet and grocery store.
Goat’s Milk
Any brand of goat’s milk is a great and simple addition! It can help absorb nutrients, reduce yeast build-up, soothe irritation from GI or allergies, strengthen the immune system, and boost hydration. SUCH a good addition for any diet.
Bone Broth
Any brand of pet-safe bone broth is good for supporting general pet health! It helps detox the liver, aids in digestion, boosts the immune system, supports hip & joint health, AND skin & coat health. Basically, the all-in-one addition that has LOTS of benefits.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is rich in omega-3s and 6s, which are essential for not only skin & coat health but also immunity and brain health. It can help reduce itching and inflammation. It lubricates the GI tract, which helps with digestion or anal gland issues, and it’s great to try for picky pets. Use a plain extra virgin olive oil.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil offers several health benefits since it’s rich in fatty acids. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties, it enhances skin & coat health, and helps reduce inflammation. Helps to boost the immune system and improve dental health. It can also be used to ease coughing fits and reduce hairballs. It’s a great addition for picky pets and can even be used topically. Use unrefined (also called virgin) coconut oil!
Eggs
Did you know your pet can eat every part of an egg, even when it’s raw?! Eggs are FULL of different essential vitamins and calcium. It’s a good source of healthy fats, which are beneficial for skin & coat health. It’s easily digestible, high in protein, and supports the brain, bones, and the nervous system. Quail eggs are even more nutritious!
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a fiber and energy source, making it a 10 out of 10 addition for pets of all ages. It helps promote a healthy skin & coat, digestion, and benefits heart health. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory. Make sure to feed your pet plain oatmeal! It can be fed dry or rehydrated.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a fiber powerhouse, making it great for digestion. It can help regulate blood sugar, improve your pet’s stools, benefit eye health, and help your pet feel fuller for longer. Canned pumpkin (with no additives!) can help boost hydration, and dried pumpkin has deworming benefits.
Apple Cider Vinegar
A quick and easy antifungal rinse can be made with a 1:1 ratio of lukewarm water and apple cider vinegar. Use this on irritated paws or skin, and even ear flaps (not in the ear canal) to help prevent bacteria and yeast buildup. You can also add it to your pet’s food to help soothe upset stomachs and allergy-related symptoms. Can mix unsweetened apple sauce or plain Greek yogurt with ACV and even ginger to make a quick and yummy antacid for an upset tummy. Plus many other benefits like lowering blood sugar and pressure and preventing UTI’s.
Make sure to get raw, organic unfiltered to avoid pesticides/other chemicals!
Fruits
Not all fruits are pet-safe, but the ones that are have the same benefits that they would for humans. Each fruit has different benefits, like apples are a great source of fiber, blueberries are rich in antioxidants, cranberries support UTI health, and so on!Not safe fruits look like cherries, grapes, and avocados.
TIP: If your dog struggles with eating poop, try adding a couple of chunks of pineapple (fresh and not with syrup).
Vegetables
Not all vegetables are pet-safe, but the ones that are have the same benefits that they do for humans. Each veggie has its own benefits, like bell peppers promote eye and skin & coat health, cabbage is great for the digestive system, green beans, broccoli, and peas are full of vitamins and fiber, and so on!
